Sciatica

Overview:

Sciatica refers to a condition where pain radiates along the route of the sciatic nerve, stretching from the lower back, through the hips and buttocks, down to each leg. This pain usually arises when the nerve experiences pressure, commonly due to a herniated disk or bone overgrowth. While sciatica pain can be intense, many cases are treatable and resolve within a few weeks.

Symptoms:

  • Pain that travels from the lower back to the buttock and back of the thigh and calf.
  • Varying pain intensity, from mild aches to sharp, burning sensations or even electric shocks.
  • Pain intensification while coughing, sneezing, or prolonged sitting.
  • Occurrence primarily on one side of the body.
  • Potential numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected leg

When to Consult:

  • Persistent pain that doesn’t improve with self-care within a week.
  • Severe pain that worsens.
  • Experiencing sudden and severe pain post a violent event like a car accident.
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control.

Potential Causes:

  • Herniated Disk: This is one of the most frequent causes where the disk protrudes, pressing the nerve.
  • Bone Spurs: Overgrowths on the spinal bones can put pressure on the nerve.
  • Rare Causes: Some tumors or diseases like diabetes might damage or put pressure on the nerve.

Risk Factors:

  • Aging, leading to spinal changes.
  • Obesity, which adds stress to the spine.
  • Occupations demanding back-twisting, heavy lifting, or prolonged driving.
  • Sedentary lifestyle and prolonged sitting.
  • Conditions like diabetes affect nerve health.

Complications:

While many fully recover from sciatica, some might experience:

  • Reduced feeling in the affected leg.
  • Weakening of the leg.
  • Bowel or bladder control loss.

Prevention Tips

  • Regular Exercise: Strengthen your core muscles for better posture and spinal alignment.
  • Mindful Sitting: Opt for seats offering solid lower back support. Keep a pillow or towel at your back’s curve and maintain level knees and hips.
  • Proper Body Mechanics: When standing for extended periods, occasionally rest one foot. Use your legs while lifting heavy items, avoid twisting, and always seek help for lifting awkward or weighty objects.
