Cervical Spine Fusion Surgery

Cervical Fusion from the Front of the Neck:

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is a medical procedure accessed through the front of the neck, typically regarded as less painful compared to interventions from behind the neck. This technique is pivotal for addressing substantial disc protrusions, necessitating the removal of the entire disc—either due to its diseased state or to reach a ruptured section at the back of the disc.

During this procedure, a spacer, often made of synthetic material, is positioned in the disc space to avert collapse and is filled with small bone fragments. This allows the adjacent vertebrae to fuse within a span of six to twelve weeks. Potential patients should note that this surgery has a slight risk of inducing permanent “hoarseness” and usually involves a temporary swallowing difficulty due to the shifting of the voice box and throat during the operation.

Cervical Fusion from the Back of the Neck:

Cervical fusion can also be executed from a posterior approach, usually in combination with a cervical foraminotomy or laminectomy. This method involves inserting screws into the bone, linked to small rods—termed “lateral mass screws”—owing to their insertion into the lateral mass of the vertebra. These screws can be integrated into all cervical vertebrae from C1 to C7 and can be attached to the thoracic spine.

This posterior method is highly effective in mitigating pain from arthritic degeneration, stabilizing fractured vertebrae following trauma, and preserving stability in patients with instability or tumors.

Regardless of the approach, whether anterior or posterior, cervical fusion procedures, including ACDF, serve as critical surgical solutions aimed at resolving and relieving pain and discomfort stemming from diverse spinal conditions.
