Trigeminal Neuralgia, or tic douloureux, affects the fifth cranial nerve, providing sensation to one side of your face. Typically developing in later adult years, it manifests in episodes that usually increase in frequency and severity, with pain-free intervals in between.

Those experiencing this condition often describe the pain as severe and sharp, akin to an electric shock, primarily impacting the lower or upper jaw, sometimes the forehead. Simple actions like touching the affected areas, talking, or chewing can induce this pain.

The majority of Trigeminal Neuralgia cases are attributed to an arterial loop coming into contact with the trigeminal nerve close to the brain stem. In rare instances, a small vein may cause the condition. A small percentage of cases are due to typically benign tumors, making an MRI scan essential for all patients. If a tumor is discovered, we usually recommend surgical intervention.

Early on, medications, especially Carbamazepine (Tegretol), are often effective. However, when they are not sufficient, our specialists can administer facial injections or perform microvascular decompression. This procedure involves a small craniotomy behind the ear.

Using a microscope, the surgeon will separate the interfering blood vessel from the trigeminal nerve and use a small pad of cotton wool to keep it permanently away. This approach is successful in alleviating pain in 90% of cases.
